The job of certified pharmacy technicians are to help a pharmacist to provide medication to the patients. A technician usually performs simple tasks to get the prescription ready. This means that a technician will label medication bottles and count tablets. There are administrative duties that have to be done too. These duties can usually include answering the phones, operating cash registers, and stocking shelves.
The pharmacy technician refers all questions concerning health, drugs, and prescriptions over to the pharmacist. With out a pharmacist present the technician can not addressee these concerns for the patient. Technicians that work in a retail pharmacy have varying responsibilities depending upon the regulations and state rules.
A technician is allow to receive refill request and written prescriptions from the patients. Sometimes a prescription is phoned in or sent electronically. A technician is allow to handle these as well. Technicians verify information on prescriptions to make sure it is all complete and right. When preparing a prescription pharmacy technicians can count, pour, retrieve, weigh, mix, and measure medications as long as a pharmacist is around.
It is then their job to print the labels for the prescription, and pick out a container. Then they have to place the label on the container and the medication in it. After the technician has priced and filed the prescription the pharmacist checks it. The prescription has to be checked by a pharmacist before it is given to the patient.
Patients profiles must be prepared and maintained by the pharmacy technicians as well as filling out insurance claims, and taking stock of the store inventory. Most non prescription medications have to be inventoried as well. There are added responsibilities when a technician works in a hospital or clinic and a nursing home.
Some of these responsibilities include reading a patients chart, and preparing the right medication. After the prescription is checked by the pharmacist the technician then delivers the medicine to the patient. The information will then need to be added to the patients profile and that is also the technician's job.
The hours that a technician works will depend on the hours of the pharmacist they work with. A technician has to work the hours that the pharmacist works because they can not prepare medication by themselves. Depending on the institution the technician works in they could be asked to work nights, weekends, and holidays. Most pharmacies have regular hours but a hospital or nursing home can have various working hours.
