How To Maximize Your Official Recruiting Trips

by Guest Author

Have you scheduled all 5 of your official recruiting visits? It is important as you begin to schedule your official visits that you keep in mind that these are business trips. I know there are a lot of stories out there about how much FUN your recruiting visits are and don't get me wrong they are A TON of fun, but it is critical that you approach them as a business trip.

Years ago, when I took my recruiting visit to Stanford I had a great time. It was a ton of fun meeting great players from all over the country. Coach Green teamed me up with a great player on the team to show me around campus and Palo Alto. I had an amazing trip, and the key is that the entire time I stayed focused on keeping it a business trip.

Why is it important to think of it as a business trip?

Well there are several reasons why you want to treat your visit like a business trip. On your visit, the coach is going to team you up with a current player on the team...what do you think the first thing a coach does once you leave campus to go back home? He calls the player he teamed you up with into his office and starts interviewing him about you. The coach asks the current player:

Do you think he would fit into our program?

Did he keep his wits while he was around you?

Would you want him as a teammate?

These are only a few questions the coach will be asking your host. Obviously, there will be a ton of questions he will want answers to if he is going to offer you a scholarship. Coaches today are looking for kids that are great people both on and off the field.

KEY STRATEGIES ON A RECRUITING TRIP:

1. PREPARE: Write down all your questions before your trip, so when you get on campus you are prepared to get your questions answered.

2. DO THE RIGHT THING on campus. There will be times on your visit that you may find yourself in different situations...it is critical that you always do the right thing on your trip. Do not give the coach any reason not to offer you a scholarship.

3. Talk to as many of the current players as possible. Find out how they feel about the campus, coaches, other players, professors, etc. This is important

4. Always talk to students as well. Find out what they like about the school...how are the athletes treated on campus? Do the athletes fit in? Get a good feel of what your collegiate experience will be like from as many people as possible.
