Preparing your dogs food yourself can be the best thing to keep your dog healthy. Doing this is not time consuming. What you get for a little extra time is a good recipe to keep your dog healthy.

So why give yourself this additional work when it is easier to walk to the store and buy ready made canned dog food? The first reason is that you are in control of the kind of food you end up serving your dog.

Next, it can also be cheaper to make it yourself. Even if you purchase your dog's food in bulk, you can still save money by preparing his food at home.

You have more choices of different recipes to try on your dog when you prepare the food yourself. You can make special diets to your dog's taste.

When making homemade dog food, avoid the use of salt and saturated fats. Salt has a tendency to cause your dog to be dehydrated.

Choose lean ground meat like ground turkey which is both a cheaper alternative with lower saturated fat compared to lean red meat.

The amount you should prepare at any given time will depend on the size of your dog, how often he eats in a day and how often you would want to do the cooking. Any food not eaten should be refrigerated for up to 5 days only.

One more point to remember, introduce any new diet little by little to avoid any digestion problems.
