There are over 120,000 nursing positions that need to be filled up in the United States ant the nursing college are doing their best to address this. It is projected that this shortage would even increase at a very high rate to the point that nurses will be outnumbered by the patients.
With this situation, the nurses are now able to command their own price for their services. There are nurses who are able to make as high as $60-$70 an hour. Of course the law of supply and demand is clearly seen here, supply is outweighed by demand therefore providers can dictate their worth to society.
It is the best time for they can dictate the price for their service and worst for most are overworked thus the quality of health care is affected because of this. Time may come that a patient's life may be lost caused by this.
The American hospitals are now seeking the help of staffing agencies to get nurses from other countries. The legislative branch is now taking steps to allow these immigrants to gain citizenships as they serve in the hospitals.
But the health care system that there migrant nurses will be leaving are also suffering from nursing shortage. How can they now address this problem?
Our government throws money at everything. Even in nursing education they provide educational grants, loans, etc. The problem is they do not have enough professors to teach new nurses. In fact, there were almost 30,000 qualified nursing students last year that could not get educated.
Is this the government's responsibility to ante up even more money to educate new nurses? That is not for me to answer, but it seems like some of these agencies and hospitals could do more to encourage and help nurses enter the workplace. After all, these same agencies are willing to pay upwards to $5,000 as a hiring bonus for qualified nurses.
The nursing shortage is a problem that must be addressed. Be part of the solution and get a nursing degree from nursing school.
